QVC Marine Field is one of Chiba’s famous landmarks and home to the Chiba Lotte Marines baseball team. The stadium, which holds 30,000, officially opened in April of 1990 when Madonna performed there during her Blonde Ambition Tour. It was called the Chiba Marine Stadium until 2011, when the name was changed to QVC Marine Field.
The Chiba Lotte Marines are a professional baseball team in Japan’s Pacific League and are owned by the Lotte conglomerate, a multinational food and shopping corporation with headquarters in South Korea and Japan. The franchise began in 1950 as the Mainichi Orions and went through a merger and several name changes in 1958, 1964 and 1969. The team played in central Tokyo until 1972 and moved to Sendai in 1973. They returned to Tokyo in 1978 and it wasn’t until 1992 that the team was relocated to Chiba City, taking on the name Chiba Lotte Marines. The Chiba Lotte Marines won the Pacific League Championship six times in 1950, 1960, 1970, 1974, 2005 and 2010. They also won the Japan Series (日本シリーズ, Nippon Shiriizu) in 1950, 1974, 2005 and 2010. (The Japan Series is a seven-game series between the winning clubs of the league’s two circuits, the Central League and the Pacific League.)
The stadium is situated along Makuhari Beach and you can easily glimpse a view of Tokyo Bay from the infield upper deck seats on a clear day. The right field bleacher seats are almost always sold out. The fans congregate in that area sporting their Marines white jerseys and chanting throughout the game, adding to the already charged atmosphere!
In addition to hosting the Chiba Lotte Marines, the stadium hosts the rugby union and the annual Summer Sonic Festival.
Founded in 2000, the Summer Sonic Festival is a two to three day festival held simultaneously in both Osaka and Chiba. The festival hosts both major national and international acts and the lineup has included such performers as Coldplay, Arrested Development, Oblivion Dust, Green Day, Beck, Marilyn Manson, Guns ‘n Roses, Blondie, Cheap Trick, Perfume, Lady Gaga, XJapan and Vamps.
If you happen to be in Chiba during baseball season, make a point of seeing a Japanese baseball game at the QVC Marine Field. You will find the experience truly rewarding.
The stadium is just 10 minutes on foot from the JR Kaihin Makuhari Station. Alternatively, you can catch the free shuttle bus from the JR station.
